Mystery Squire

Squire Thorn's jealousy

Who is that?!

Seeing all these tweets on the recent NIN shows last week had me come up with this mess of a doodle. Shortly after that came this mess of a comic.

I couldn’t resist doodling my own cartoony version of the current guitarist.

So go ahead and check it out and wonder why Squire D seems to have the most friends (or enemies) other than the other squires.

Squire Thorn and the “Resistance”

Squire Thorn joins some sort of reisistance

Guess who I am!

Squire C thinks Thorn’s just a “stupid bambino”, of course. This was an old doodle in a square-graph Moleskine I did around the NIN Year Zero days. Welp, I just figured I could have just put this in the Stolen Ice Creams section. More will come! In the meantime, many of you are probably already aware of the return of North-Side. Or, rather, North-Side archives. Check it out, comment, or make a request of what you’d like to see again.

Boarding School Thorn and Mangled Childhood Memories

Thorn's morning back to school

Don't look too happy, Thorn.

This doodle was done a while ago in one of my recently finished Moleskines. Risking confusion and, possibly, the only viewers I have – I added a few changes to Squire Thorn’s character. His character makeover has him originally coming from a well-to-do family. He was sent to a boarding school, complete with everything Squire D would envy – including afternoon tea and croquet.  This drawing is of Squire Thorn the day he returned to the boarding school.

But even if I have changed Thorn’s character, I’m totally not against the usual viewers seeing him as one of many 2D versions of Aaron North. The subtle references and subtle likeness won’t go away.
While we’re on the subject of Squires of Dimness, check out one of my recent Prismacolor drawings of them from one of my current Moleskines. This was just one of my many recent “exercises” where I play around with the underused colors. Not exactly the three color exercise I did a while ago, but close. A fun subject with this one was to show each Squires’ personalities.

Some of you might have already seen my parody doodle on my Flickr page of two characters from one of my favorite cartoons as a kid – The Real Ghostbusters. Sure, there’s a lot of inaccuracies (i.e. nametags on their uniforms) but it was a lot of fun drawing goofy versions of the two opposite personalities. I will say that this parody is just one of many mangled memories. Stay tuned!

Oh yeah – before I forget, please take part in the on-going (though sporadically updated) narrative that’s going on in the Squires of Dimness blog. So far, it looks like Squire C will end up being pulled into a mysterious black car. Don’t want that to happen? Turn the tide with your voting comment!

The Lost Ice Creams and YZ Squire C

Yum!

Yum!

My sketchbooks are full of messy panels of comics I’ll probably never finalize. But some I think are too ridiculous to keep to myself. So I’ve created a new page here where I’ll post either works in progress comics, rough drafts of finished comics, or scrawls that will either become finished products or never will. So check it out!

At the moment I’ve got one of Whyte I’ve doodled in one of my smaller Moleskines. This was one of those instances where the comic drew itself. It started with one random doodle and so on. Instead of karaoke singing or eating an ice cream Thorn hasn’t tried stealing yet, Whyte tries his hand at cooking. You can see where that went. Poor Whyte!

As is my habit, I can never decide where I want to post what. If you head over to my struggling deviantART page, you can check out Squire C dolled up in a Year Zero uniform. Many of you probably can figure out that I was trying to imitate Alessandro’s pose in this photo. I originally had Squire C nitpicking at the tie he was wearing and saying something along the lines of, “Eh, it is not *insert designer name here*.” just to show off his fashion snobbery. So now he’s just standing there with his mouth partly open. He could be in mid-sigh. Fill in the caption, if you will.

Mini Squires: Turning a New Leaf

Uh, like, why?

Uh, like, why?

Hoo boy! Whether you like it or not, guys, I’m still here AND I return with a new Squires of Dimness comic. Actually, if you follow me on Twitter, you’d probably see more of my “still working on new comic” tweets than actual comics.

But, yeah, this comic, while just a Mini Squires, was sitting on my drawing board for, oh…I don’t know, two months? And how long did I spend on the last two panels? This past weekend I contemplated on the last panel, erasing, drawing, erasing, drawing again, until I either got lazy or figured the end result was the best idea.

I originally was going to have Squires C and Thorn duking it out. I already had that drawing out and ready to ink until I went back to my scribbly storyboard in my sketchbook to see a panel with a puff of smoke, fists flying, teeth knocked out and a stray sock. It was the stray sock. That was the winner.

Yeah, it’s probably a cheap shot, but it’s done! So check it out!

Speaking of Squire C, some of you might have noticed the “choose your own adventure” type story going on in the Squires of Dimness blog. At the moment, it seems the next scene involves the angry Italian squire running for dear life. I’ll keep updating the story as best as I can. I’d love to see how long I can drag this out…

…unlike the calendar that, somehow, stopped at March. Welp, you never know when I’ll fire those up again!
